My Personal investigation was originally looking at Synesthesia, I began this investigation by exploring different photographers whose work is closely related to the senses as I am very interested in listening to music whilst taking photographs. However, over time I slowly changed my theme into viewpoint which opened up more opportunities for me. I began to look into exploring the city from various viewpoints and angles. I then explored various photographers whose work mainly focused on the city.
Synesthesia Photography
Synesthesia is when one sensory is stimulated it leads to another one being automatically stimulated for example a person might see a number and automatically associate this with a certain colour. I began to have interest in this form of neurological trait as I sometimes listen to music during photography to give me inspiration for my photographs and for my personal investigation I want to see how much I can represent what I imagine when I am influenced my other media. synesthesia photography usually contains a certain pattern that only people which synesthersia can see like for example one of Marcia Smilack's photographs is called "Lion face" although I cannot see anything but water I find this interesting since it is not something I have witnessed in photography before, so I wish to look further into synesthesia photography and see whether I can perhaps notice this pattern.
Marcia Smilack
I found Marcia's photographs are amazing to look at due to the colour flooding out of them with the reflections adding a twist on the sea and bridge photographs by showing us a unclear picture and letting us try to piece it back together or by showing us something that we know cannot be real yet it looks so realistic that it's hard to confirm it as a reflection. Some of her photographs which are not reflections are also unique and shows off her style which cannot be replicated. I also find it interesting that Marcia can see different things in these photographs due to synesthesia although I have a feeling I know what it might look like to her from the slight shapes in the pictures.
Marcia Smilack also did a section of synesthesia photography which she called "The colour of music" which was inspired by music. I find intriguing to look at since I also feel like every type of media does have a picture or pattern that can go with it, I only wish I could know what music she represents these photos since I am thinking of representing music via pictures for my personal project.
Michael Bosanko
Michael is a light photographer who travels the world, all of his photographs have a unique style to them such as the bright vivid colours which makes his photos seem unnatural my favourite photographs being the colourful petrol station and the picture with the stars in the sky creating the spiral in the sky although all of his photographs have characteristics that makes you want to stare at them for hours.
Investigating the Threshold Concepts
During the course I looked at several Threshold concepts to look at which are all based around different key points of photography. I studied Threshold concept 1 : http://www.photopedagogy.com/threshold-concepts1.html and I decided to look at Still life photography since it is one of the areas of photography I rarely use and I thought it might give me more ideas to go towards looking at Synesthesia . I began by researching Jeff Wall's photographs which gave me a few ideas. I like the way in which his photographs are staged. Todd Hido's photographs gave me inspiration because I loved the style of them I loved the composition and how they all contained sharp angles and the viewpoint from which they were taken. and I wanted to look a little more deeper for photographers with a similar style who worked with Synesthesia or at least just taking a few photographs similar to that while influenced by music.
I think that both the Threshold concepts and the class experiments actually lead to me changing theme since they gave me a sense of freedom which in turn made me reconsider whether the theme was the best approach and in the end lead me to look more into viewpoints which eventually became my theme of my investigation.

Still life photography
Still life photography usually means taking photographs of objects that are inanimate or large open areas with several unmovable objects although it can also link with other types of photography as well as light photography or street photography, this usually results in everyones still life photos being drastically different to one another unless they have taken inspiration and planned to take similar photographs.
Ori Gersht
Ori Gersht's photographs all have very different styles to them since they are all done with different techniques and taken in various places around the world, what makes these so interesting is the amount of work it would of taken to just find or take even one of these pictures and the unique style each one has to each other, such as the spiral staircase and doorway with bullet holes in the wall to the duck being dropped in to the pond of water with the orange on the ledge behind it. Some of Ori's photographs on the right might end up being similar to some of mine in this personal investigation due to them not being limited by types of photography and each of the photographs being taken in many interesting styles which is what I hope my photographs from this personal investigation end up doing overall.
Thomas Demand
Thomas Demand's photography has a sort of desolate feeling to it due to the lack of people within the locations, seeing emptiness within a place which may usually be associated with a gathering of people makes it seem eerie and somewhat sinister this makes his types of photographs somewhat similar to that of Todd Hido since his is also a fan of places we expect to see people although Todd Hido's photographs do have some evidence of people. The main focus of his photographs seem to be capturing angles or simple objects with a frame.
Jeff Wall
Jeff's photographs are normally staged such as using actors and stages to take photographs although the style of the photographs catches my eye almost immediately such as the way he is trying to convey a message in the photos by displaying things in such a way, for example, the flooded grave and the destroyed room have a story to them of which the viewer has to look twice and it is this which draws people into his photographs as well as this the fact that some look obviously fake and some look real makes the viewer question what they have been viewing this creates several questions in the head of the viewer which creates a type of relationship between him and the observer due to this style of art.
Todd Hido
Todd Hido's photographs have a certain sense of isolation within them as if they are far away from human civilisation altogether although this is not the case as we can clearly see footprints in the snow in one photograph and the houses likely have occupants although down to the style of the photographs it makes everything sinister and unsettling due to the colours seeming out of place and the light often being hidden by the thick mist in the photographs this in turn makes the photographs seem unnatural and off-putting. Todd however also takes other types of photographs as well although they don't interest me since I tend to avoid taking photographs of people I focus more on places or simple objects too.
Photographs influenced by threshold concept 6: Chance
These photographs were taken during a challenge I set myself where I would take photographs without looking through the viewfinder and looking at the photograph after I took it this meant that I could not see whether I was zoomed in or not and whether the picture was blurry, surprisingly most pictures came out really well however some of the pictures I really which I could of taken again due to them not being zoomed in or being out of focus however for a first attempt at this as well as having the limitations of not being able to look at my images I think I did rather well. However I still want to look at other ways I could of looked at chance as well for example I might try to use a camera which is film based instead of digital so as soon as I take the photograph the image is permanently on the film.
The results of this certain photo shoot range quite a lot since some of the images came out very blurred which in my opinion spoils what could of been a great photograph if I knew that the focus wasn't quite right although other photographs such as the frames or the hanging rib cage came out much better than I originally thought although the idea of not looking through the view finder was hard it was also an very fun experiment which has taught me that sometimes you will need to rely on your gut and sometimes the best photographs can be taken without looking which was the case with one or two of these.
More photographs influenced by chance
These photographs are also to do with chance but I also decided to incorporate some elements from still life photography too. Originally I was trying to take more photographs to do with music although I started to find photograph opportunities towards people in the street and how/where they were standing therefore I decided to look for places where people had stopped walking and try to capture the moment although most of these photographs are somewhat repetitive there are one or two which stand out on there own and this has tempted me to change my theme from photography around music which was yielding little result to chance where I can take hundreds of photographs and then refine them down to the ones that stand out like the image of the people on the bridge being reflected in the dirty water.
After researching the various artists I decided to look at various different locations around London and I had in mind using the angles of the buildings and structures around me. Using this as an aim to take photographs was interesting as it made me look at buildings, objects and structures as a series of shapes. I used a digital camera to take these photographs. I am very pleased with how they turned out because they differ from my usual photographs as I changed the way of looking. I incorporated chance into this photo shoot by limiting myself to 20 photographs, at first I decided to take photographs of anything that caught my eye however while walking around one of the locations I noticed that there were several people who were positioned in some very strange way plus the location they were in had very unique characteristics so I decided to try and take photographs of people positioned in different ways and attempt to also capture the sharp shapes and angles that was in the background.
Photographs influenced by music
These photographs were influenced by certain songs, however I found this to be quite frustrating since I walked away from several things which I still regret not taking photographs of since it did not match the few songs I was using for this photo shoot. As well as this I don't feel like all of these photographs are the best they could of been although there are several which do still work and a few which I have no complaints with however I just feel like this music idea is way too limiting despite my open mind for types of photography therefore I have made the dissuasion to change my theme to chance. The two songs which I found yielded results were Vapor by AMBO which is industrial country and The tempest by Pendulum which is techno, this is most likely to the constantly changing pace and style of The tempest and the lonely, mechanical and soft sounds of Vapor. However this does not mean I have ruled music out completely since I am planning to incorporate music later on in the project but not like this photo shoot since this felt way to limiting.
Although I do like these images I am quite disappointed that some of them are slightly out of focus due to the fact that they were taken ether at night time or in quite dark areas and I still think that some images that I didn't take would of worked better than these even if they didn't relate at all to the songs. The images that I feel work the best are the images of the stair case and the image through the small gap looking into a building site since they have their own atmosphere which stands out above the rest of the images.
Looking forward/downwards/upwards (The viewpoint photoshoot)
I looked back on several of my photographs which I felt turned out very well and I noticed that several of these photographs had things in common with each other and that is they are usually positioned so they are facing upwards, downwards or forwards from a distance, I am now hoping to replicate this formulae by looking into other ways that I can incorporate this into new and even more inventive photographs.
These photographs were taken all over London at different locations with strong differences to each other, as well as this I only took pictures of things that caught my attention as well as this I also kept in mind to get everything from different angles some of which most people won't notice or wouldn't be able to get to for example to photograph in the metal spiral structure was taken by pulling my camera above me and blindly taking the photograph several times until I had a picture I was happy with, this was the case with one or two of these photographs and I think the ones I did this with turned out well in the end. I also tried to vary the subjects and the distance or angle I took the picture from this resulted in all of my picture having different styles and feels to them which in turn made the whole set more interesting and unique. I also think most of these images were taken down to the mood of the day, I would say this caused a large divide in my photographs since half of them are colourful and half of them are monotone and although it might be down to the places I visited, I still think it was the mood since I could of taken a photograph of anything and I would have a different result, I will try to incorporate music into this since music also creates mood, however this time I will use whole genres of music instead of limiting myself to one song like I did before therefore I might have a strange range of images at the end of the photo shoots.
Summer photoshoot 1
For this photo shoot I want to see how images in a place outside of London which I have never visited compare to images taken inside of London in a place I have taken photographs in before, However I am also thinking of doing two more photo shoots depending on how well this one turns out in 2 more places one which is still within London but in a place I've never visited and one outside of London this time actually in another place I have visited before. For this photo shoot I will use a camera I have never actually used before as well meaning this photo shoot I am expecting to have images with huge differences to all of the other photographs I have taken this far. I have little knowledge about Yorkshire but I expect it will be similar to Bristol with dense farmland followed by a small urban community in the centre.
These photographs was taken in Yorkshire during my time on a trip. The photographs from my time in Yorkshire surprised me since the amount of detail in each image. I focused on extreme close ups. Because I was in an unfamiliar place it helped influence my photographs differently to ones I would normally take at home or with music. These photographs were also influenced by chance since I decided to use a camera I had never used before, what else was different about this camera to my usual one was the fact that it has a plastic case which makes it waterproof but at the same time makes me unable to look at any photographs I had taken without removing it as well as the screen of the camera was pixelated so what ever photographs I had taken looked completely different to the ones above therefore any blurry photographs or ones with too much light look different here than they did on the screen of the camera. Most of the pictures however look a lot better off the camera and I am happy they kept all there detail and aren't pixelated which I feared they might of been.
Summer Photo shoot 2
For my next photo shoot since the last one turned out so well I am deciding to another shoot in another place I have never visited but this time within London, I have decided that I will reuse this camera for this photo shoot as well but for the next two photo shoots I will use another two cameras and then compare and contrast the results of this experiment, just like the trip to Yorkshire I am unsure of what the area will actually look like although I expect it will look similar to Eltham although I expect it will look a bit more built up.
These photographs were taken using the same camera as the first photo shoot however this time I was in a very similar place to where I usually take photographs and I decided to use music to influence me again as well as focus primarily on texture, reflections and looking forwards/downwards/upwards which are the main things that I focused on during the first photo shoot. These photographs contrast very well with the first set, with both sets having photographs I dislike and certain photographs which I would be happy putting in a photo book or even a exhibition however what makes these stand out to me is the coordination between the colour and the texture of the images, the photos that show this the best are the photographs of the play area and the clouds, this is due to the play area looking very gloomy at the time of day I took some of the photographs and the fact that the play area was near enough abandoned at that time of night, as well as this the clouds look almost photo shopped with a almost unreal colour mixed in with the soft texture making it look like a painting.
Photoshoot near home
This photo shoot was taken during my visit to central Greenwich where a was attending an small exhibition called "Photographer of the world" although I also saw it as the perfect opportunity to take photographs around Greenwich which is a place I visit regularly which is in central London, this time though I took my regular digital camera rather than the one which I used in the summer photo shoots which I have a lot of experience with. I am intrested to see how these images compare to the last two photo shoots since the photographs will likely be completely different.
This is my 3rd photo shoot which was taken throughout central London in places like the National maritime museum, Greenwich market, Cuttys ark E.T.C, for this photo shoot I used my normal camera for the photographs since I wanted both clear photographs of the actual exhibition and since I am also very familiar with the area over there I knew where I could get some really good photographs and I didn't want lack of experience on a certain camera to ruin any of the photograph I did take as well as adding some diversity to the photographs between the photo shoots. Overall I would say most of the photographs came out exactly as I wanted, the most key of these being the photographs of reflection since these came out better than expected as well as having amazing detail hidden within them if you look close enough at them and these photographs have inspired me to look deeper at detail, reflections and looking Forwards/downwards and upwards for my first final draft.
Exhibition
These photos were taken during the photographers of the world photograph exhibition, sadly due to copyright infringement I was not allowed to take photographs close up to any of the photographs at the exhibition however if it didn't single out any of the photographs then we were allowed to take the photographs which was what I did. The overall exhibition was amazing with many imaginative works to look at plus throughout the exhibition they wanted to incorporate the audience within the exhibition so there was certain walls which looked like maps with instructions on with pins next to it so when you reach the wall you read what you have to do then you place the pin on the wall, the end result was walls with pins of vast colours scattered all over it. At the end of the exhibition I bought two photo books which I have looked though and I most likely reference some of the photographers within it in some of my later work.
Familiar place photo shoot: Home
These 21 photographs were taken to show me through objects and body in a place with was familiar to me, the place I chose was my home and I decided to show myself through objects which are important to me, show something about me or have a hidden meaning to me however I found the location I chose to be very limiting, next time to improve I think I would chose a place or places that I have a significant memories of and take photographs in that location rather than using objects and body which doesn't work very well with my type of photography. However out of all of these there are several photographs that stand out from the others which look really good on there own but there are also one or two photographs that don't meet my standard and I don't particularly like too much.
Edited photographs
I edited these photographs to focus more on the subject of the photograph or experiment with different techniques which I could later use on more photographs I end up taking in the future, one thing that stood out about these was the photographs I used clone-stamp on have came out really well and it got me thinking about taking more photographs with vivid colours and having a large range of photographs in this style, however I decided that changing my theme again would be a bad idea and since I am enjoying my current theme it would seem rather meaningless but it does not mean I can't experiment more with this later on so it's something to look into if I want to display a photograph differently or if I decide I want some parts of a photograph in black and white and other parts in colour.
My Zine
I used the photographs I took during my performance photography photoshoots and my first familiar places photoshoot to make my zine however I also wanted to add a twist to my zine by using a colour photograph next to an black and white or edited photograph to every time you turn the page you get a different style of photograph. For the actual making of my zine I used Adobe InDesign which is a software I have never used before, this also lead to many dilemmas with my zine for example each photograph needed to be a certain size which lead to me needing to make some of them bigger which caused pixilation of the images and while printing my zine half of the pages turned out to be upside down. If I retry making my zine later then I will try fixing all of these mistakes which might actually help me get more used to Adobe InDesign in the process.
Helene Binet
Helene's photographs are very similar to some of my previous photographs in fact I am unsure why I have never seen her work before, however the way that she is looking upwards/downwards/forwards like that makes it very relevant to my photographs and my project in general however one key difference between my usual photographs and Helene's is the fact that mine are usually in colour while Helene's are in black and white. This has given me an idea for my own photographs where I will take a photograph of a object or place with a distinct colour to it and turn the photograph completely black and white, then using clone stamp on photoshop I will only add that colour back to a section of the photograph while leaving the majority of the photograph in black and white.

Shinro Ohtake
Shinro Ohtake is an artist who is famous for his scrapbooks however he has also taken several photographs as well one key thing I noticed about Shinro's photographs is the way he frames the image, he does this by not only taking an photograph but also leaving room for the background to enter the image so you have a contrast of objects Shinro wanted in the image as well as the background in the distance, this is very similar to how I frame my photographs however I take the photograph without moving anything while Shinro is an artist so I wouldn't be surprised if he moved some objects around in the image. Another key thing that stands out to me from Shinro's photographs is the way he uses contrasting objects or locations in his photographs like the boat outside the small cabin or the metal sculpture overlooking the hillside in the distance, in theory this shouldn't work however something about how Shinro takes the photographs makes it work which makes them so interesting to look at.

Texture, reflection and Viewpoint photo shoot
I am planning to go to Rochester which is an small town just outside of London which I visited many times due to it's unique shops, from what I remember the entirety of Rochester well known for it's history and a lot of shops and houses in the area are renovated on the inside but on the outside it looks exactly like something out of a history book bar the shop signs but one thing which I remember the most is Rochester castle which is directly in the middle of the town and I am planning to go around the town and look for as many unique views and textures as possible. For this photo shoot I am planning to use a camera on a mobile phone which will be completely different to the two cameras I have used so far which are both digital and hopefully an phone camera will give a unique style to these photographs just like the small digital camera I used for the summer photo shoots.
This is my fourth photoshoot which was taken in Rochester which is an historic town however it offered a varied array of photographs from objects in shops to abandoned caravans in the fields nearby. I decided to use a phone to take photographs to vary this from the previous 3 photo-shoots even more however with the phone the photos seemed to be unpredictable since the photos look clear on the phone but appear blurred on other equipment however this is not true for one or two of the photos which appear exactly like they do on the phone. I mainly focused my photographs on my current theme, reflections and texture to keep all of the photoshoots on the same page. However one thing that crossed my mind was the fact that the first two photo shoots were done with the same camera in areas which was very far away from London and were similar in atmosphere to each other, therefore I decided for my final piece I would make three collages using the photo shoots to represent each area and device I used while only using 3 photographs from each one, however I decided that since photo shoot 1 and 2 were similar that they should be classed as a single photo shoot therefore I combined the images of both photo shoots for a single collage. If I revisit Rochester soon I will probably retake photographs multiple time rather than once like these so if they do come out blurred then I have more photographs to fall back on, plus next time I think I will use an normal camera rather than a phone.
First Outcome
These photographs are collages of 3 separate photographs from each of my photo shoots above however I decided to combine photo shoots 1 and 2 for the middle image since the atmospheres of the photographs just seemed to match. I chose to only use 3 photos from each shoot for each collage to not overcrowd the image and to get each of the photographs to stand out plus I limited myself to photographs which was looking down somewhere like a corridor or pathway to show off the uniqueness of each location. I also chose to do it like this since all of the locations are vastly different for example we have photos taken in the centre of London on the left which shows us a crowded and detailed collage, however it does seem somewhat messy with parts popping in and out while the centre photograph which was the photo shoots taken in the outskirts of London and in the middle of Yorkshire comes off as a highly textured and complex collage, and the last one on the right is in the middle of Rochester which has an old fashioned look about it despite being a popular tourist location and heavily visited like central London. I would say these collages truly show the differences of each location and how they vary against each other.
What intrests me about these collages is how the images overlap each other since you have two or more detailed sections placed on top of each other which is simular to looking through a shop window and viewing the streets and people behind you and at the same time you get the people and objects in the shop, this adds an element of chance and mystery to the image since on the photographer can tell what everything is since it has become disorgaised and complex which allows the viewer to have their own interpatateion on the image. Since these have come out so well I am thinking of going back to looking at the familiar places photoshoot which I did and see whether to continue with that and make an collage from photographs in places I know quite well or to look back on some of my older photographs and experiment with them a bit more.

Peter Fraser
Peter's photographs very similar to some of my previous photo book and street photography photographs due to his interest of scenes with out of place objects in everyday backgrounds, I find this interesting since several of my photographs share several similarities with quite a few of his photographs despite me never seeing his work before. One key difference between my photographs and Peter's is the fact that all of Peter's backgrounds appear to be completely different to each other therefore I would say he only takes one photograph per location while I take as many photographs as possible to compare and contrast them against each other and come up with more ideas, however I have no way of knowing this for certain since he might select his favourite photograph to display, the only way to truly know for certain is to ask him about it.

Boris Mikhaliov
All of Boris's photographs are collages however the amount of thought that must of gone into each photograph which went into making just a single collage is astounding since he would need to carefully frame every single shot just right to get the results he has plus he would have to have an idea in his head before he even takes ether of the photographs which makes these even more astounding. These will also help me decide which of my photographs I should be put together and which photograph should be in the background and which should be at the front. But the key thing I learnt from these photographs is the subjects of the photographs need to share a few basic similarities but not to many for example positioning is key although the photographs don't necessarily need to have objects or backgrounds that go together, but the key thing I am aiming for which Boris has also done is make a story out of each separate collage.

Familiar place photo shoot: School
For this photo shoot I decided to retry the familiar places idea in a location I had taken plenty of photographs in before but this time I planned only to take a photograph if it was from a different angle than I usually take photographs in school, this resulted in me looking for certain spots I might normally over look as well as spots or rooms that had a reflective surface which lead to a new view point of the location so I could take photographs which don't look much like my previous ones in each location. For me this photo shoot was very difficult since I have taken so many photographs around the area that finding places with a new viewpoint or I might of overlooked was time consuming and it ended up with me getting a lot less photographs than I wanted however I have decided that I am going to do another familiar place photo shoot in another location I have already taken photographs in but not as extensively as school.

Looking through experiment
For this photoshoot I decided to limit myself to only taking photographs looking through objects to see whether this would get me thinking out side the box therefore even in a place I know near enough off by heart perhaps I could end up getting a new perspective from a viewpoint I usally miss, at first this was very difficult since most of the things I took photographs of were reflections origially however after a while I started noticeing small gaps everywhere, which allowed me to arrange and then take several photographs with varyed and vast results. I also now know to always be observent even in places you are very used to since you might find something which will completely change your pespective, I think these photographs are great additions to the familiar places photoshoot of the school since the original photographs I took I found to be very repetative since they look to simular to some of my older photographs.
Familiar places photo shoot: High-street side alleys/streets
For this photo shoot I walked down side streets and alleys on or nearby the high street however I had a rule I kept to the entire photo shoot which was I could only go a maximum of two streets (Not including alleys) away from the high street however I was very surprised just how big some of the alley were one of which took a good 5 minutes without stopping to walk down, what also surprised me was the amount of places and alleys I had no clue existed or connected up until after this photo shoot. While the highstreet is quite modern the backstreets and alleys were really run down but what interested me was how desolate some of the locations was, this actually put me on edge more than I thought it would I still expected to see at least one or two people down each road however at one point I had walked around for around a hour without seeing a single person.
Texture overlay collage
This collage was made out of 15 photographs from the Looking forward/downwards/upwards photo-shoot which were all highly textured and since I made 3 collages out of my most resent photo-shoots I wondered what the result would be if I chose more photographs from an older and larger photo-shoot I had done in the past. The one main issue I have with this collarge is the way that you struggle to see what everything is in the collage and due to this detail within the images is lost however the shapes and lines within the collage are very eye catching and keep your attention fixed on to the entire photograph. I want to encoperate this into a final piece of somekind however at the moment I have many ideas but I have no clue which one or one's will turn out the best therefore I might try a slection of my ideas and work with whatever works the best.
Small Texture and viewpoint collages
These images will be used in my final collage along side the familar places and summer photoshoot collages and the texture overlay collage. I decided to overlap two photographs each which I felt went together however this process was very long and drawn out because even if the photographs looked like they would go together there was always a chance that when I put them together they would not come out how I imagined at which point I would then need to rethink and prehaps swap one of the images out for another.. 20 of these collages were made solely from the Fowards, upwards and downwards photoshoot and the other 4 are combinded from the familiar places, viewpoint, texture and reflection photoshoots the reasons for this is I want the final collage to be a combination of all the major photoshoots in my personal investigation, therefore I planned for the outer boarder to be made from the 20 collages from the Fowards, upwards and downwards photoshoot and a second border made from 8 collages made from the familiar places and viewpoint photoshoot collages which have 3 photographs combined in them and the other 4 being the combined familiar places, viewpoint, texture and reflection photoshoots with only 2 photographs combined in each collage.
Daido Moriyama - In pictures
This video about Daido Moriyama is very inspireing to me since it shows just how simularly we see the world around us, for example the idea of seeing cites as jumbled by everyone's desires and thoughts, as well as our desire to photograph in urban places. Another thing is both me and Daido try to replicate things we have seen in our childhood as well as documenting our movements and journeys around were we are taking photographs, however one key difference between our work is the fact that Daido tends to put his work in black and white since he says it looks more erotic but I tend to keep mine in colour since I feel like turning a photograph monochrome takes away some of the identity of the photograph therefore I only do it if the photograph focuses on texture and detail.
Familiar places photo shoot collages
I made these 3 collages to go with the first final piece collages, for these I used the photographs I took in my familiar places photoshoots and chose 3 photographs from each photoshoot and made a single collage out of the photographs to represent each photoshoot. One key difference between all of these collages is how each collage from left to right has less curves and more lines each time which shows how much these three familiar places varied from each other in terms of environment and objects around them, for example the photographs taken at home are all of uniquely styled objects which stand out even when put in a collage while the few at school are somewhat experimental despite being organised which causes the lines in the images to be in a sort of conflict with each other and the final collage done with the high street side streets and alleys have strong lines which are bold and standout since most built up areas are built to be functional and ordered but not to standout which in turn means there is a lack of curves and anything disorganised shown in it.
Combined familiar places and Summer photo shoot collages
These collages are two combined versions of a photograph from each viewpoint, reflection and texture photoshoots and the familiar places photoshoots. (The one on the left being the viewpoint, reflection and texture photoshoots and the one on the right being the familiar places photoshoots) However I broke my own three photograph only rule with the viewpoint, reflection and texture collage since there were four photoshoots I decided to use four photographs. This two collages will be the last two collages needed for the inner border of the final collage and the entire collage as a whole. I like how both collages despite having the photographs combined still have there unique textures visible as well as having them all stand out on their own, this like the other collages I have made creates the need to look at each collage more than once which is the idea I want out of the final collage.
Combined collages
These 33 photographs are cropped and edited versions of the small viewpoint photoshoot, summer photoshoot and the familiar places photoshoot collarges since I need them all 500 X 500 pixels for my final overall collage (Not including the texture overlay collage which is 1000 X 1000 pixels) However sadly some of the detail in some of the pictures has had to be cropped down more than I would of liked but I kept in the key parts and objects in all of the pictures and I hope that even though they will all be together their key differences will stand out and that will attract the viewers eye to each and every section of the overall final collage.
While making my final collage I realised the pattern of the leftover white boxes, while they made the collage look incomplete I did quite like how they looked among the rest of the photographs since the white contrasted with the strong shapes, colours and patterns of each of the photographs however in the end I decided to play around with some of the placements of the photographs before finishing the collage so I could document the results. While these were not used in the end they might give me some ideas with later collages and the one furthest on the right looks very unique and gives me serveral ideas for both later photographs and final pieces since I enjoy collage making I might want to make a collage simular to it with different pictures with an picture placed underneath which would show throurgh the blank space.
Final Piece collage
This is my final collage, I feel like this is the documentation of the entirety of my personal investigation's journey as well as being eye catching with details which require you to look at each section of the collage separately to fully take in the collage. However I still felt that even though the collage keeps the idea of viewpoint in mind, it feels very two dimensional and very ordered and organised on it's own so the viewer has no impact and cannot rearrange it therefore they only get the one viewpoint on it which I don't want so I am thinking of making hollow pipes or tubes which the audience can move about and build their own collages rather than being left with a pre-made one. The idea of having these tubes hollow would mean they can make different infrastructures and use the centre of the tubes to act like windows giving different viewpoints of their own structure.
Texture collages
If I had more time I would of made a cube with these photographs on the sides with different materials to mimic some textures in the images however this would take a lot of time to do and I feel like that would then move away from the idea of viewpoint, but it would of been an interesting experiment if I had more time and was focusing on texture instead.
Final Piece
For this final piece I printed several versions of the final collage and then spray mounted them to a piece of card and scored the areas between the pictures to make the tube like structure of the blocks that you can see. The reason why I made this as a final piece is down to the fact that my audience can move each block around so every object you make with these tube will look different as well as the tubes look like buildings when put together which will mean everyone will make their own unique landscape if given these blocks and told to put them together. The centre of each block is like a view finder from a camera with a different viewpoint and each view from everyone's sculptures will be different from each other which will mean that interacting with my final piece will create a different landscape and in turn different viewpoints each time. As you can tell from my example each side of the sculpture looks completely different from each other and the collages on the sides of the tubes causes you to experiment and even if you create the same shaped sculpture as someone else the collages will be in different places creating countless possibility's and combinations.
My Personal Investigation Essay
What I was hoping to look at during My personal investigation is about whether other media such as film or music can be represented as photography.
I am interested in this as I often listen to music to get inspiration for photographs and I wanted to see whether there is a pattern to this and whether the type of music affects the appearance of the photograph. For this project I didn’t want to limit myself to certain types of photography ether since that could heavily affect the outcome but I do want to start eliminating types of photography and music along the way and in the end focus on the most interesting ones to get the best results.
I have looked at many photographers with this topic in mind, one of which did a project very similar to this before, they are Marcia Smilack who is a reflection photographer who has Synesthesia (Synesthesia is a disorder which allows the person to represent different numbers or letters and sometimes media like music with different colours and shapes) so she has tried to show what she hears in music through colours and patterns and also sees certain shapes and colours in her photographs which I myself cannot see this makes her work interesting to look at and relevant to my investigation since I also want to show the image that comes to my mind while listening to music although that picture often varies depending on my mood while listening to the music and the time of day. The another photographer I looked at is Michael Bosanko who is a light photographer who travels the world and takes some really amazing photographs as well as this I feel like light will be a key component in my investigation since light painting photography is easy to manipulate into a picture or a feeling just by using certain colours or using certain shapes, but what stands out about Michael’s work is it passes a certain emotions to me which I find to be strange although his photographs are mainly taken at night in empty areas it gives off a warm, happy feeling which I find to be somewhat strange and I would like to investigate further into this. One photograph I have taken which was influenced by music and made me want to do this investigation in the first place was the photograph of a door on the other side of a brick wall with a small metal window in it, this however was not the first photograph taken where I was influenced by a media of some kind and they all seem to have certain emotions linked with them in my mind.

A photography quote I know which addresses why I wanted to do this project is “Photography is the story I fail to put into words” (By Destin Sparks) this is due to me using photography to show my emotions and display what I cannot display through any other medium such as writing which I have always tried to get into although down to my dysgraphia I have always found it too hard to complete even a few thousand words without spending a lot of time on it and eventually I would normally give up, as well as my nervous side around others usually means I am quiet and don’t speak up, this usually means I find it hard to show my thoughts to others and I usually resort to photography to do this. It’s this fact that I want to display with this investigation I want to show sides of myself that I find it hard to display in real life and I find that I also resort to music to do this so I wanted to combine the two and show the development of some of my work.
One art form and photography technique that has caught my attention from the photopedagogy website is still life this is due to the fact that I feel like my personal investigation will take me down the route of building scenes and looking at normal photographs from a different angle this may end up with me looking at artists and model makers as well as photographers to influence my photographs since I want to be influenced by art as a whole, so I can clearly see development in my work over time. Another thing that makes me want to look into still life is that fact that I can choose what I want to do and limit myself as little or as much as I want plus it can be both a clean and chaotic style of photography at the same time, this to me means I can explore and experiment as much as I want and slowly develop my work and always end up finding a artist that might of done work similar to mine to compare and contrast with. I might also want to look into staged photography and altered landscapes since these might also come in handy as well as perhaps using Jeff Wall as one of the photographers to take influence from since his style of photography is both interesting to look at and similar to the topic I’m doing since he has also been influenced by other artists he’s looked at. Other photographs as well as Jeff I plan on looking at from photopedagogy’s website are Thomas Demand and Ori Gersht this is due to their photographs having both a clean and chaotic style to them as well as the colours which are used in their photographs along with the detailed texture may end up greatly influencing some of my later photographs.
Another photographer I have chosen to look at is Todd Hido who instead of still life does altered landscapes, what attracted me to his work is the use of light in some of his photographs especially those taken at night on a misty day or the photographs of houses with only one light on in a window, these photographs give off a unique atmosphere which I may need to replicate during my project for some of my overall ideas, plus these photographs of his remind me of some of my older pictures as well so I can draw inspiration from his style of photography.
However after a while of trying this project I noticed that most of my photographs seemed to be looking downwards, forwards and upwards (looking at Viewpoint) which I wanted to explore in more detail since the idea of incorporating music into photography seemed to not be going anywhere and instead I wanted to look at unique locations and see what my photographs might turn out like if I looked at things through a different perspective, another reason this jumped to mind was since this played a large role in making my photo book however I never actually acknowledged it or even researched to deeply into it therefore it was an unexplored field for me but I had a lot of experience in taking that type of photograph.
With the idea of looking forwards, downwards and upwards (Viewpoint) in mind I decided to complete 4 separate photo shoots for these I decided for one photo shoot completely without music with a camera I had never used before in a place I had never been to before in the countryside. Another photoshoot with the same camera but with music and some experience with the camera but again in a place I had never been to before in rural area. A photo shoot in central london where I have been several times I also used my normal camera as well as listening to music. The final photo shoot I was on the outskirts of London in a older area than the third photo shoot for this photo shoot I used a phone to take the photographs which is not a type of photography I am used to as well as this I also didn’t use music for this photo shoot therefore all of the photo shoots were very different with conditions.
While mainly focusing on photographs with this new theme I decided to complete more research into photographers around the theme to give myself more ideas for later on the photographers being Helene Binet and Shinro Ohtake. Helene Binet’s photographs were all of different manmade structures with great detail which combined two of the areas I was looking at which was texture and viewpoint as well as focusing on more industrial scenery however one key difference between my work and Binet’s is the fact that her photographs are in black and white, but this then later made me decided to look for certain textures and objects that I might of originally avoided due to it not being eye catching originally and also influenced several of my photographs in the third familiar places and the texture, reflection and viewpoint photo shoot. Ohtake’s photographs were vibrant and colourful with many strange objects all placed together which comes off like a type of collage as well as this he also captures the background of the object or place he is taking the photograph of so after you look at the primary objects of each photographs it allows you to see things you originally didn’t realise was there resulting in photographs which you need to look at more than twice to see the full image, Ohtake’s work heavily influenced my idea of making collages out of my photo shoots since colleges also have to be viewed twice to see everything within the image.
How I approach my photographs and/or subject matter is often by walking around an area and taking a photograph of anything that catches my eye however I often repeat this process around 4-5 times before moving away, this allows the location to change throughout the day so things that may not be there early in the morning are there in the late afternoon plus I feel like some photographs might look better if it was later in the day for example then I would return there when I feel the light is just right. This does lead to some dilemmas where some objects are moved when I get back or it might require me to linger around the area for several hours but this is also why chance and viewpoint are so key to my photographs is down to the fact that you have to see the photograph clearly in your head and you also need to hope that nothing happens when you are away to disrupt you chance of taking that single photograph.
For my final piece I decided to make a collage out of the 4 viewpoint, reflection and texture photoshoots, the viewpoint photoshoot and the 3 familiar places photoshoots. To get inspiration I looked at both Boris Mikhaliov and Peter Fraser since Peter Fraser’s images are similar to mine since he looks at everyday objects and the environment around him as well as focusing on the colours around him, the reason I wanted to look at someone with similar photographs to me which are all in colour is down to the fact that I want an idea of how to arrange my images in the actual collage therefore I looked his photographs and noted all of the similarities in separate photographs of his and tried pairing them up myself. While Boris’s photographs are all put into collages so I looked at how the photographs go together for example one of his photographs is of a jade green pig which has been laid on top of an car which is barely visible however the road and it’s scenery standout around the pig and the image looks like the pig itself is running down the road. This shows how the photograph has been thought about and paired with a photograph which will give this type of illusion, this is what I want to come off from my photographs and final piece which will be made up of several small photographs similar to Boris’s.
The process I used to make my final collage was I imported my paired photographs to photoshop and then I changed all of my photographs to 500X500 pixels, this however meant I needed to crop down some of the photographs to do this I cropped anything which was not vital to the photograph and focused primarily on the main object or subject of the photographs and cropped around that. I decided that I wanted two borders, the first border being made up of 20 photograph collages from the viewpoint photoshoot with the collages only being made up of two photographs. The second border was made up of 12 photographs 4 of which was combined collages of the viewpoint, reflection and texture and the familiar places photoshoots these I kept the same rule of only two photographs per collage however the other 8 collages were the final collages of the familiar places and viewpoint, reflection and texture photoshoots but 2 of which were collages of both photoshoots, these collages I decided should have 3 photographs added to them rather than two to make them stand out more. While in the centre of the boarders I placed the texture overlay collage which instead of 500X500 I put it at 1000X1000 to make it the centre piece of the collage, I feel like this final collage I have made documents my entire journey from the start of my personal investigation to the finish, however I still want to create another final piece that represents viewpoint and urban photography at the same time.
For my final piece I printed out larger versions of my final collage and then mounted them to pieces of board and then made tubes of all different sizes with different parts of my final collage on each tube and then made a sculpture out of them to represent urban landscapes and different buildings. However I left the tubes hollow since then you can look through the centre of the tubes to get a different viewpoint of the whole sculpture so every time the sculpture is made the view through the tubes will be different as well as the entire layout of the sculpture. I am alot happier with this as my final piece rather than just the final collage since it actually incorporates the viewer into the piece while also focusing more on viewpoint than the final collage did, another thing that pleases me with it is the fact that it also is eye catching in 3D as well as still keeps the urban landscape feel of the photographs since you can build your own buildings out of the tubes which is interesting to view and take photographs of from all angles.
The only thing I think I could improve about my personal investigation is if I wasn’t so indecisive with what my project theme was to begin with I would of experimented with viewpoints a lot more than I actually did in the end rather than looking at Synesthesia then moving slowly towards viewpoint, however me looking at Synesthesia helped guide me towards looking at my work as a whole and moving ahead with what I feel works in my photographs and rather than trying to do a completely different topic, it showed me that sometimes refining and looking at what your work does well and finding a theme to suit your strengths is better than trying to do something completely different since trying to change what you're drawn to can take a long time to get used to and sometimes you don’t have enough time to fully adjust within the time limit allocated, so it’s better to keep somethings the same so you can adjust to your theme by using the area you have experience in to your advantage.
